A concert "SOLO" featuring the leader of Pink Freud and Wojtek Mazolewski Quintet. The program is described as an intimate, atmospheric, almost cinematic story without words—a narrative about an artist and his instrument.
In jazz, the double bass is often undervalued. Since Duke Ellington's big band era, it has been primarily assigned the role of rhythmic foundation for the showpieces of trumpet players, percussionists, and pianists. Mazolewski presents it as a melodic instrument, carefully revealing the richness and depth of its sound.
The album "SOLO" guides the listener slowly through sonic and compositional details. The musician creates a space for concentration and reflection, avoiding new-age clichés. This requires some effort from the listener. Like in Zen meditation, silence, a delicate pulse, and sonic vibrations are meant to lead to an understanding of the complexity of nature and humanity's place within it, resulting in an intense aesthetic experience.
Mazolewski has worked on the international music scene for years. His quintet's album "Polka" was among DownBeat's favorite records of the year. The musician has frequently appeared on Gilles Peterson's BBC program, where he also recorded a Brownswood Session. This year's album by Wojtek Mazolewski Quintet, "Live Spirit I", received positive reviews in Jazzwise, UK Vibe, Record Collector, All About Jazz, and Jazz Forum.
