The play "The History of Sin" based on Stefan Żeromski's novel, directed by Wojtek Rodak, will be performed on November 6, 2026 at 7:00 PM at Narodowy Stary Teatr im. Heleny Modrzejewskiej, on the Scena Kameralna stage. The creators work with the melodrama convention and deconstruct it. The fate of the main character, Ewa, is treated in a non-individual and metaphorical way, and on stage she is confronted with the male characters from the novel.
The artists attempt a queer-feminist reading of Ewa's story. They want to go beyond the male perspective written into Żeromski's novel and fixed in Walerian Borowczyk's film adaptation. Their focus is on the character's entanglement in patriarchal dependencies and the changing narrative around women over the years. They want to present the female body and sexuality in a subjective way and seek to free it from convention. The production raises the question: must Ewa, expelled from paradise for the first sin, always be condemned to hell?
