About this event
"Trick or Treat I - Watch your back and front" is a horror animation block curated by Daniel Šuljić. The screening takes place as part of the 33 Etiuda&Anima IFF on October 29, 2026 at 11:00 PM at Małopolski Ogród Sztuki in Kraków (Main Hall). The program includes seven films: • "The Tell-Tale Heart", dir. Ted Parmelee, USA, 1953, 7'47" • "Thing", dir. Malte Stein, Germany, 2021, 4'32" • "The Flesh Dress", dir. Joachim Herisse, France, 2026, 15'10" • "Moodswing", dir. Pieter Coudyzer, Belgium, 2003, 11'45" • "Chainsaw Maid", dir. Takena Nagao, Japan, 2007, 6'52" • "The Cat", dir. Zlatko Bourek, Yugoslavia, 1971, 9'56" • "The Present", dir. Joe Hsieh, Taiwan, 2013, 15'15" In his program notes, Daniel Šuljić writes that animation is always an indirect image of reality, because unlike live-action cinema, it does not record what existed before the camera. Bodies, spaces, and movement are constructed. This is why horror works differently in animation than in live-action film. Bodies can stretch, crack, and transform, familiar places become unstable, and the impossible appears natural. Fear can also arise from the transformation itself, from observing frame by frame how something familiar becomes foreign, as well as from movement, texture, rhythm, sound, or distortion. The program traces the evolution of this transformation. Ted Parmelee's "The Tell-Tale Heart", based on Poe's prose, and Zlatko Bourek's "The Cat" represent a tradition rooted in literature, folklore, and grotesque. Later generations of creators, as the curator notes, push these boundaries. His essay also mentions other titles.
