The Georgian National Ballet "Sukhishvili" celebrates 80 years of existence and embarks on a jubilee concert tour worldwide. The company will perform in the United States, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Netherlands, and Baltic countries. The program features the best numbers from the entire history of the ensemble.
The jubilee program includes:
- male dances with acrobatics, jumps and spinning swords,
- female performances,
- male dancing en pointe, recognized as the company's signature move.
Artists perform in costumes made from natural fabrics, decorated with silk embroidery, stones and metal. Music is performed live by the company's orchestra, which uses rare national instruments and ancient playing techniques passed down through generations. The company's founder Nino Sukhishvili says: "Dance is a language, the history of my country, its traditions and soul. It is Georgia's calling card".
The company was founded in 1945 by Ilko and Nino Sukhishvili, and is now run by the third generation of the family – the founders' grandchildren. According to the description, "Sukhishvili" has given tens of thousands of concerts in over one hundred countries across five continents, including performances at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and La Scala in Milan. The company has been called "the eighth wonder of the world" (The New York Times), "a hurricane on stage" (Daily Telegraph), and "energy that can lift an entire hall to its feet" (Le Figaro).
The jubilee tour is meant to be more than a series of concerts, as it will combine the company's history with its achievements in one event.
