Jewish Prayer House in Wieliczka (Wiejska Street)

Wieliczka
About Jewish Prayer House in Wieliczka (Wiejska Street)

The ruin of a Jewish prayer house and cheder from the early 19th century on Wiejska Street in Wieliczka.

The Jewish prayer house in Wieliczka stands at Wiejska 9, in the former Jewish settlement of Klasno, which lay within the former boundaries of the town of Sierczy. The building is today a ruin and in danger of collapse, so it can be viewed only from the outside.

Prayer house and cheder

The building was constructed in the early 19th century as a prayer house for women. It also served as a cheder, that is a Jewish elementary school. To the north-east it adjoins the old synagogue.

After 1939

During the Second World War the Germans devastated the interior. After the war the building served as a building materials store of the Housing Management Enterprise. Since then it has not been restored to use and has gradually fallen into ruin.
