Sundial in Zakliczyn

Zakliczyn
About Sundial in Zakliczyn

A double sundial from 1973 on a wooden former parish school from 1817.

The sundial in Zakliczyn is a double vertical sundial on the gable of the former parish school at ul. Mickiewicza 35. The building is wooden, of post-and-beam (przysłup) construction, from 1817, and entered in the heritage register. It housed a parish school and the teacher's flat.

How it works

The two dials share one gnomon. The upper one, with concentric circles of months and wavy hour lines, shows official time. The lower one, with straight hour lines and hyperbolic zodiacal curves, shows local solar time. On the upper frame is a Latin inscription from the Book of Genesis: "et sint in signa et tempora et dies et annos" (and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years).

Author and renovations

The dial was designed and made by the astronomer Dr Jan Mietelski during the renovation of the building in 1972-1973. It was originally painted in oil paints and renewed in 1989, and the plastic version of 2000 did not prove successful. The present one, from 2008, was made using photopolymerisation.

Nearby is the Town Museum "Pod Wagą" in Zakliczyn.
