About Decjusz Villa

A Renaissance villa from 1530-1540 in Wola Justowska, Kraków, rebuilt by the Lubomirski and Czartoryski families, today the seat of a cultural association.

Decjusz Villa is a Renaissance villa in Decjusz Park in Wola Justowska, Kraków, at 28 Lipca 1943 17a. It was built in 1530-1540 by Just Ludwik Decjusz, the owner of Wola Justowska, and today it houses the Decjusz Villa Association, which runs cultural and literary activities.

From manor house to villa

Originally a manor house stood here, with a high roof, irregularly placed windows and a small viewing loggia in front of the façade. In 1590 the estate was bought by Sebastian Lubomirski, and his son Stanisław, after 1620, had a storey added to the building and two Baroque towers built, with a viewing loggia between them. The outbuilding now called the Łaski House was built at that time as well.

Later owners included the Sanguszko, Morzkowski and Wielowiejski families. In the 19th century the Ledóchowski family removed the onion domes of the towers, and after 1844 Henrietta Kuczkowska added the imposing entrance stairs, the tower balconies and the attic.

The Czartoryskis and destruction

From 1876 the owner was Marcelina Czartoryska. After a fire in 1882 she restored the villa to a design by Tadeusz Stryjeński. Earlier, the princess, a pupil of Fryderyk Chopin, had organised concerts here. Until 1917 the villa belonged to the Czartoryski family.

In the 20th century it housed barracks, during the Second World War the seat of the German police, and after the war a training centre of the labour cooperatives, a boarding house and a hospital ward. In the 1970s the building fell into ruin. It was restored in 1996.

Nearby

The villa has been in the heritage register since 1930 and lies on the Renaissance Trail in Lesser Poland. From Wola Justowska it is not far to the Kościuszko Mound and the Zoological Garden, and the city centre is a few kilometres away.
