Railway Viaduct in Kraków Grzegórzki

Kraków
About Railway Viaduct in Kraków Grzegórzki

A railway viaduct from 1863 over Dietla Street, demolished in 2022 and rebuilt with its historic facade.

The railway viaduct in Grzegórzki crosses the streets Grzegórzecka and Dietla, between Kraków Główny station and the Kraków Grzegórzki stop. The present structure is a reconstruction of the former one.

A bridge that became a viaduct

The bridge was built in 1861-1863 over the Old Vistula, to a design by Leon Mikucki, for the Charles Louis Railway (Karol Ludwik) on the Kraków-Lwów line. It was opened on 23 November 1863. In 1878-1880 the river bed was filled in and the bridge became a viaduct. It was 98.6 m long and had five spans on stone piers with brick vaults.

Demolition and reconstruction

In 2021 the structure was removed from the heritage register, and in January 2022 it was demolished. In 2023 it was rebuilt in reinforced concrete, with the historic facade recreated, to carry four tracks, also for the Fast Agglomeration Railway. The viaduct is a stop on the Kraków Technology Trail.

On the way from the Old Town you can also look in at the Main Market Square, less than a kilometre away.
