A synagogue from 1879-1881 in Podgórze, a heritage-register monument, since 1997 the seat of the Starmach Gallery.
The Zucker Synagogue, also called the Hasidic House of Study, stands in Podgórze at Węgierska 5. The building was put up in 1879-1881 as a house of prayer. Since 1997 it has housed the main seat of the Starmach Gallery, so the former synagogue is today an exhibition space.
During the Second World War the Germans devastated the synagogue. After the war the abandoned building was taken over by the state and handed to the Vocational Training Association, which set up a factory and a warehouse in it. This use ended in 1995, when the building was bought by the Starmach Gallery.
After thorough renovation and adaptation, completed in 1997, the gallery moved its seat here. The synagogue is entered in the heritage register under number A-1015, since 31 January 1996.
Podgórze is a district linked with the history of Kraków's Jews. In the neighbourhood stands Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory, and on the other side of the Vistula, in Kazimierz, is the Old Synagogue.
