Synagogue in Wieliczka (Seraf 11)

Wieliczka
About Synagogue in Wieliczka (Seraf 11)

A synagogue from 1911, in the occupation the seat of the Judenrat, today housing businesses.

The former synagogue at Seraf 11 in Wieliczka was built in 1911. Today it is neither a place of worship nor a site to visit, and the building has lost its original appearance.

History of the building

In the 1930s the building also served as the seat of the Jewish community. During the German occupation in 1939-1942 it housed the Jewish Council (Judenrat). In August 1942 the Jewish community of Wieliczka and its surroundings was deported and almost completely exterminated, and the Germans devastated the interior of the synagogue.

After the war

After the war the building was rebuilt many times. It housed a workshop of the "Promień" Disabled People's Cooperative and flats, and today several private firms are based there. The synagogue was entered in the heritage register on 26 November 1987.

Practical information

  • Address: ul. Seraf 11, Wieliczka. The building is used by businesses, so it can only be viewed from the outside.
