About Cosmic Spiral Sculpture in Nowa Huta

A metal sculpture by Antoni Hajdecki from 1974 on the Tysiąclecia estate in Mistrzejowice.

Cosmic Spiral (Spirala kosmiczna) is a metal open-air sculpture on the Tysiąclecia estate in Kraków's Mistrzejowice, near block no. 29. It is one of the sculptures that have decorated the estates, squares and playgrounds of Nowa Huta since the 1960s.

What the sculpture is

The author is Antoni Hajdecki, and the work dates from 1974. The composition is made of metal: strips of sheet metal joined by crossbars loop into a fanciful spiral.

Background: sculptures in Nowa Huta

Open-air sculptures were made in Nowa Huta in large numbers in the 1960s and 1970s. Young artists, mostly graduates of the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts, received flats, studios and grants from the “Hutnik” Housing Cooperative, and in return their works went into the green spaces of the estates. In 2018 a trail of Nowa Huta's open-air sculptures and installations was marked out.
