The PTTK (Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society) mountain hut on Polana Chochołowska is the largest mountain hut in the Polish Tatras. It lies at 1,146 m above sea level in the Western Tatras, administratively in the village of Witów. It is known simply as the Chochołowska Hut and serves as the main accommodation base in the Chochołowska Valley area. It is run by PTTK.

History

The first hut was built in 1928-1931 and opened in 1932. In January 1945 the building was burned by the Germans. The present building was rebuilt in 1951-1953. In June 1983 John Paul II stayed in the Chochołowska Valley. A plaque commemorates this, and the hut bears his name and has a Papal Room.

The building and facilities

The hut has a volume of about 9,500 m³ and 121 beds in rooms from two to fourteen people. Walkers have at their disposal a common room, a year-round ski store, a walkers' kitchen and a drying room. Beside the hut stands the Chapel of St John the Baptist, and a restaurant operates inside. According to the hut's website advance booking is required, and there is no sleeping on the floor.

How to get here

The green trail leads to the clearing through the whole Chochołowska Valley. From Siwa Polana, according to the hut's website, the walk takes about 2 hours 5 minutes. You can also take the "Rakoń" tractor train, a bicycle or a highlander horse-drawn carriage. From the hut trails set out to Trzydniowiański Wierch (red) and the yellow one through the Bobrowiecki Gorge to Grzes. The white-yellow Papal Trail leads to the Jarząbcza Valley.

Nearby

The clearing lies surrounded by spruce forest. In spring crocuses bloom here and sheep grazing begins. The Chochołowska Valley is described separately in the entry for the Chochołowska Valley. The hut on Hala Ornak in the neighbouring valley is more than 5 km away as the crow flies.
