About Girl Sculpture in Nowa Huta

A sculpture of a girl in a dress, made of artificial stone, in front of a nursery school on the Na Skarpie estate in Nowa Huta.

The Girl, also called the Preschooler or Ania, is a sculpture standing on the Na Skarpie estate in Nowa Huta, in front of the building of Nursery School No. 46. It shows a girl in a dress, set on a low plinth. The sculpture is made of artificial stone.

Where it comes from

The entry on open-air sculptures in Nowa Huta states that the author is unknown and that the work dates from the 1960s or 1970s. At that time sculptures were put up in large numbers on squares, playgrounds and lawns of housing estates, and young graduates of the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts received flats, studios and grants from the “Hutnik” Housing Cooperative. A local anecdote is attached to the Girl: she is a child whom her parents did not collect from nursery school on time.

Nearby

The sculpture is one of many described in the entry on the district's open-air sculptures, and in 2018 a trail of Nowa Huta's open-air sculptures and installations was created. The district as a whole is described on the page Nowa Huta.
