About Monument to Sigismund II Augustus in Kraków

A stone statue of King Sigismund II Augustus in the Strzelecki Park, unveiled in 1883, designed by Walery Gadomski.

The Monument to Sigismund II Augustus stands in the Strzelecki Park in the Grzegórzki district, at ul. Lubicz 16, in the southern part of the park. It was unveiled on 10 June 1883. It was funded by a former Marksmen King, Adolf Opid.

Authors and form

The design of the statue was made by Walery Gadomski, and the sculpture in limestone, known as Pińczów stone, was carried out by Michał Korpal. The king is shown in 16th-century dress, with a scroll in his hand, on a tall plinth.

Strzelecki Park

The park covers 1.41 hectares between ulica Lubicz, ulica Bosacka, ulica Topolowa and ulica Zygmunta Augusta. The land in the Wesoła suburb was bought in 1837 by the Marksmen's Society, that is the Marksmen's Fraternity (Bractwo Kurkowe), and its seat was opened on 15 October of that year. In the park stand more than 20 monuments and plaques, and also the Celestat, a Neo-Gothic little palace with a reception hall.
