About Monument to Polish Independence in Nawojowa Góra

A replica of a monument from 1934 destroyed in 1942, unveiled in 1991, with a bas-relief of Piłsudski and an eagle.

The Monument to Polish Independence stands in Nawojowa Góra in Kraków County, beside national road no. 79. The present monument is a replica of the one destroyed during the German occupation.

The first monument

The first monument was unveiled on 11 November 1934 on the other side of the national road, opposite the present one. Its founder was Karol Gustaw Domański. It commemorated the departure of the legionnaires on 6 August 1914 and Józef Piłsudski. The plinth carried a bas-relief of Piłsudski and three inscriptions, including a dedication by the youth of Chrzanów County. In 1942 the monument was demolished by the German occupiers.

The boulder and the replica

In 1989 a commemorative boulder with an inscription, designed by Marian Konarski, was unveiled; it was later removed and its site levelled. A replica of the first monument was unveiled on 3 May 1991, thanks to funds from local workplaces and donations from residents. It has four commemorative plaques, a bas-relief of Piłsudski and an eagle with spread wings at the top.
