About Monument to the Martyrs Hanged on 26 June 1942 in Kraków

An obelisk by Kraków Płaszów station commemorating seven Poles hanged by the Germans on 26 June 1942.

The Monument to the Martyrs Hanged on 26 June 1942 is an obelisk on Wodna street, next to Kraków Płaszów railway station, in the Podgórze district. It commemorates seven Poles hanged by the German occupier.

What it commemorates

According to the Wikipedia entry, the Germans hanged seven Poles in reprisal for an act of sabotage: the derailment of a military train at the station here. The execution by hanging is shown in a photograph in Tadeusz Wroński's book “Kronika okupowanego Krakowa” (Chronicle of Occupied Kraków), page 213. The sources we were able to reach do not give the names of those executed.

The obelisk today

The monument takes the form of an obelisk with an inscribed plaque. A description of it is also found on the website of the Foundation Centre for the Documentation of Independence Deeds (Fundacja Centrum Dokumentacji Czynu Niepodległościowego), to which the Wikipedia entry refers. Other places in Podgórze connected with the occupation are described separately, for example Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory.
