About Monument to Juliusz Leo in Kraków

Bronze monument from 2018 to the mayor of Kraków Juliusz Leo in Podgórze, by Karol Badyna and Łukasz Podczaszy.

The Monument to Juliusz Leo stands in Podgórze, on the square at the junction of Józefińska and Nadwiślańska streets, next to the Father Bernatek Footbridge. It commemorates Juliusz Leo, mayor of Kraków in 1904-1918.

Who created it and when

The monument was unveiled on 20 February 2018, on the hundredth anniversary of Leo's death. The authors are Karol Badyna and Łukasz Podczaszy, chosen in a competition in 2017. It is a bronze figure of Leo sitting at a desk over plans of the city, in a pose characteristic of his work. The figure stands on a low plinth into which an older commemorative plaque was incorporated, and the surrounding ground was raised by about half a metre.

Why here

The location has a symbolic meaning: it recalls the joining of Kraków with Podgórze, in which Leo had a part. On the other side of the Vistula it is easy to reach the Old Synagogue and Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory.

Practical information

  • The monument stands on an open square, accessible at all times.
