A sculpture by Czesław Dźwigaj unveiled in 1993, on the centenary of the death of the painter, who spent holidays here.
The Monument to Jan Matejko stands on the market square in Nowy Wiśnicz, not far from the town hall. It was unveiled on 16 October 1993, on the centenary of the painter's death.
The sculptor is Czesław Dźwigaj, a professor at the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts, who comes from Nowy Wiśnicz. The idea came from the Society of Friends of Nowy Wiśnicz. The sculpture is more than 2 metres high, and the pedestal bears a quotation from Matejko: “It seems to me I have always been here…”.
The painter first came here in 1864 for a holiday. He visited the town because of the family of his future wife, Teodora née Giebułtowska. Later he spent holidays here with his wife in the Koryznówka manor house, where the Museum of Matejko Memorabilia was set up. It still recalls the artist's ties with this place.
