About Independence Park in Tarnów

A forest city park on St Martin's Hill, with Carpathian beech forest, paths and a K-30 ski jump.

Independence Park in Tarnów is a forest city park on the northern slopes of St Martin's Hill, in the Gumniska district. It covers more than 35 ha, and Aleja Tarnowskich leads to it from the centre. It used to be called the Park on St Martin's Hill.

Origin of the name and history

In 1938 Prince Roman Władysław Sanguszko gave the city a wooded area of about 17 ha with the ruins of a castle, wishing a park to be created here named after Roman Sanguszko, an insurgent of 1831 and a Siberian exile. The park's patron, Roman Stanisław Sanguszko (1800 to 1881), took part in the November Uprising, was awarded the gold cross of the Virtuti Militari order and was exiled to Siberia. The park has borne its present name since 2018.

Nature and facilities

The forest is of Carpathian beech type, and the oldest trees are 110 to 120 years old. Beech, oak, sycamore, fir, elm, ash and larch grow here. Several species of woodpecker are found, including the black woodpecker. A network of paths for walkers and mountain bikers has been laid out, and at the edge of the forest there are a summer swimming pool, a bowling alley and a K-30 ski jump with a lift. The park has a playground and a restaurant, as well as a boulder commemorating young Poles murdered here on 23 December 1939.
