The Academy's university museum with almost six thousand works by artists connected with the Academy, currently temporarily closed.
The Museum of the Academy of Fine Arts is the university museum of the oldest Polish art school, established in 1818. The museum as a university-wide unit was created in 2003. According to the museum's website it is currently temporarily closed in connection with the move of the Academy's main seat to Bernardyńska 3.
The collections number almost six thousand inventory items: paintings, drawings, artistic textiles, sculpture and design moulds. They include works by professors, rectors and outstanding students of the school, among others Jan Matejko, Jacek Malczewski, Stanisław Wyspiański, Józef Mehoffer, Tadeusz Kantor and Andrzej Wajda.
The collection was formed mainly from artists' gifts. Sculptures were donated, among others, by Igor Mitoraj and Toshihiro Hamano.
Until the move the museum occupied the first floor of the Main Building at Matejki Square 13, built in 1879 to a design by Maciej Moraczewski. A small exhibition room served temporary exhibitions. Nearby are the Barbican and the Planty Park.
