About Grunwald Bridge in Kraków

A road and tram bridge over the Vistula built in 1968-1972, linking the Old Town with Dębniki, with a view of Wawel Hill.

Grunwald Bridge is a road and tram bridge over the Vistula in Kraków, linking the Old Town (Józefa Dietla Street) with Dębniki (Grunwaldzkie roundabout). It was built in 1968-1972 and is one of the younger bridges in the city centre. From its pavements you can see Wawel Hill and the Church of St Michael the Archangel and St Stanislaus the Bishop, known as the Church on the Rock (Na Skałce).

Who designed the bridge and how it was built

The design was prepared by Stefan Filipiuk, Andrzej Topolewicz and Józef Malinowski of Transprojekt in Gdańsk. The construction was carried out by the Kielce Bridge Works Company (Kieleckie Przedsiębiorstwo Robót Mostowych), and the site manager was Czesław Kwieciński.

The name is linked to the 1972 decision to rebuild the Grunwald Monument. Earlier the name Nicolaus Copernicus Bridge was considered, to mark the 500th anniversary of the astronomer's birth, but in the end the working name was kept.

What the structure looks like

The bridge is 153 metres long and 31.4 metres wide overall, of which the roadway takes up 20 metres. The structure consists of three spans resting on two piers. The bridge has two traffic lanes in each direction, a tram track in the middle, pavements for pedestrians and cycle paths.

In 2025 the bridge underwent a thorough renovation, which included replacing the road surface and the tram track.

Views and surroundings

On both banks of the river by the bridge there are water tram stops: Most Dębnicki and Paulińska. The Lesser Poland Way of St James from Sandomierz to Tyniec also runs across the bridge.

On the Dębniki side, about 0.2 km from the bridge, stands the Manggha Museum, and by the Vistula, about 0.4 km away, the sculpture described in the entry Wawel Dragon (sculpture). It is about 0.5 km to the castle on Wawel Hill, so the bridge is a convenient viewpoint before visiting Wawel Royal Castle.
