Sromowce Wyżne
About Church of St Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr in Sromowce Wyżne

A brick parish church from 1982-1984, with relics of St Stanislaus and an organ from 1952.

The Church of St Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr is the parish church of Sromowce Wyżne, a village in Nowy Targ County, a few kilometres from Niedzica Castle. The present building is young, but the parish goes back to the Middle Ages.

From the parish of 1327 to today's church

The parish in Sromowce Wyżne was established in 1327 and later lapsed. The first certain mention of a church dates from 1614-1634. The wooden church was destroyed by fire in 1734, and the first brick church was built here in 1875.

The present building was raised in 1982-1984. The foundation stone was blessed in June 1983 by Pope John Paul II. The consecration on 23 May 1992 was performed by Cardinal Franciszek Macharski, Archbishop of Kraków.

What the church looks like

It is a brick building with one tower, holding about 980 worshippers. Inside are three altars, and a reliquary contains relics of St Stanislaus, donated by Cardinal Macharski. The church and cemetery are surrounded by a stone fence. The organ, the work of Gustav Heinze, originally came from the church in Wysoka, reached Sromowce in 1952 and was rebuilt in 1990 and 2002.
