About St James the Apostle Church in Podegrodzie

A parish church from 1830-1835 on the site of a wooden church burnt down in 1822, with a chapel added in 1994-2000.

St James the Apostle Church is the parish church in Podegrodzie, in Nowy Sącz County. The present church dates from the 1830s and stands on the site of an earlier, wooden church.

History of the church

According to the Wikipedia entry, the first church in Podegrodzie existed as early as 1014. It was wooden, with a brick apse, and burnt down in 1822. The new building was erected in 1830-1835: the foundation stone was laid on 9 May 1831, and the consecration took place on 27 August 1835. The early 11th-century date should be treated with caution, because the entry does not give its source.

Chapel and monuments

In 1994-2000 the St Stanisław Papczyński Chapel was added. Two monuments stand in front of the church: one of St James the Apostle, put up to commemorate the Year of St James, and one of St Stanisław Papczyński.
