A small church from 2001 on the Teatralne estate in Nowa Huta, standing on the site of the Nowa Huta Cross defended by residents.
The Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus at ul. Ludźmierska 2 stands on the Teatralne estate in Nowa Huta. It is a small parish church, built on a site that the plans of Nowa Huta had set aside for the district's first church.
In 1952 Archbishop Eugeniusz Baziak blessed a cross, which was carried in procession to the building site. The authorities, however, withdrew the permit and built a school instead of a church. When attempts were made to remove the cross, residents stood in its defence, and from 27 April 1960 there were clashes with the militia. The cross stayed in place.
Work began only in 1996. The design was prepared by Krzysztof Ingarden and Przemysław Gawor in cooperation with Jacek Ewý. Cardinal Franciszek Macharski consecrated the church on 22 June 2001. In 2007 the Nowa Huta Cross Monument was erected in front of the entrance.
