About Church of Our Lady of Fátima in Kraków (Komandosów Street)

Parish church at Komandosów 18 in the Podwawelskie estate, built from 1968 and consecrated in 1998.

The Church of Our Lady of Fátima is a parish church in the Podwawelskie estate, at ul. Komandosów 18, in District VIII Dębniki. It was built for the new estate because the existing St Bartholomew's Church was too small for the growing number of parishioners.

A long construction

Construction began on 11 February 1968 with the consent of Cardinal Karol Wojtyła. The building site was blessed in 1982, and the foundation stone was blessed in 1983 on the Kraków Błonia by John Paul II. The lower part of the church was blessed in 1984, the first Mass was celebrated in 1987, and the consecration took place on 7 October 1998.

Shape and interior

In the south-western part stands a 35-metre cross, and next to it a bell tower with three bells: “Our Lady of Fátima”, “St Bartholomew the Apostle” and “John Paul II”. The whole is covered by a hipped roof, and the building is divided into an upper and a lower church. In the upper hall the altar table of white marble has the shape of an oak leaf, which is the emblem of the parish. A figure of Our Lady of Fátima stands in the central part of the altarpiece. Three entrances lead inside, two from Komandosów Street and one from Słomiana Street.
