John Paul II Mound in Kraków

Kraków
About John Paul II Mound in Kraków

A seven-metre mound from 1997 on the grounds of the Resurrectionists in Dębniki, a memento of the pilgrimage of John Paul II.

The youngest and smallest of Kraków's mounds, raised on the grounds of the Congregation of the Resurrection in Dębniki, at ul. ks. Stefana Pawlickiego. It is 7 m high, not counting the cross.

Where it came from

The mound was heaped up from 31 May to 10 June 1997 as a memento of the sixth pilgrimage of John Paul II to his homeland. It was blessed by the then nuncio Józef Kowalczyk during a conference of the Polish Episcopate that was being held at the time on the grounds of the Resurrectionist curia.

What it looks like

A path lined with thujas leads to the mound and ends in a few small steps. At the entrance stands a granite plaque with the papal coat of arms and information about the pilgrimage. In 2002 the idea appeared of raising a larger mound in honour of the pope, on the site of the former Solvay Soda Works.

Practical information

  • Address: near ul. ks. Stefana Pawlickiego, Dębniki. The mound stands on the grounds of a religious congregation, so check the rules of entry before your visit.
