About Discalced Carmelite Nuns' Monastery in Tarnów

Contemplative monastery of Discalced Carmelite nuns in Tarnów with papal enclosure, founded in 2000.

The monastery of the Discalced Carmelite nuns stands in Tarnów at Krzyska 19. Under the patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary Janua Caeli (Gate of Heaven) and St Joseph, a contemplative community belonging to the Kraków province of the Discalced Carmelites lives here.

How it came about

Bishop Wiktor Skworc invited the sisters to Tarnów in December 1997. The foundation was approved in 1998. In June 1999 Pope John Paul II blessed the foundation stone in Stary Sącz. The brick building was completed in 2000 and fifteen sisters from Katowice moved into it. The bishop established the monastery on 13 December 2000 and closed the papal enclosure, and the chapel was consecrated on 8 December 2001.

Enclosure and access

Papal enclosure applies, so the interior of the monastery is not open to visitors. The community's website invites people to the chapel for services: on weekdays Mass is at 6:30, on Sundays and solemnities at 7:30.
