Chapel of the Transfiguration in Krościenko nad Dunajcem

Krościenko nad Dunajcem
About Chapel of the Transfiguration in Krościenko nad Dunajcem

A chapel built in stages in 1831-1896 as a votive offering after cholera epidemics, the oldest structure on ulica św. Kingi.

The Chapel of the Transfiguration stands on ulica św. Kingi in Krościenko nad Dunajcem, opposite the new parish cemetery. It is the oldest structure on this street.

A chapel built after cholera epidemics

The chapel was built in stages from 1831 to 1896. The foundation was a response to the first great cholera epidemic, which reached these parts in 1831, and to its returns in 1855 and 1873. Each recurrence of the epidemic was a signal to continue the work. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries the building stood alone in the fields, by the road to the crossing of the Dunajec, as protection against the plague.

A second chapel of the same name

It should not be confused with the second Chapel of the Transfiguration in Zawodzie, on the other side of the Dunajec, on ulica Zdrojowa. That one bears the date 1875 over the entrance, and accounts say that a chapel stood on this spot as early as the beginning of the 17th century. It too was founded out of fear of epidemics.
