A Modernist hospital chapel from 1916-1917, with Young Poland polychromy and relics of St Faustina.
The Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Divine Mercy stands at ulica Prądnicka 80, on the grounds of the John Paul II Hospital. It is a Modernist building from 1916-1917, entered in the city's heritage register.
The hospital building had been planned since 1913, but at first it did not include a chapel. Only the city presidium, at a meeting on 8 February 1916, approved the cost estimate for building one. The chapel was added to the existing hospital administration building, and the work was completed in 1917. The design is attributed to Adolf Szyszko-Bohusz or Franciszek Mączyński, but this has not been clearly confirmed.
The walls and ceiling are decorated with Young Poland polychromy, and the windows hold stained glass. In 1936-1937 and in 1938 Sister Faustina Kowalska prayed here as a patient of the hospital, which is why the chapel lies on the trail of places linked with her. After the hospital was extended, the chapel was consecrated anew in 2007, and the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy donated relics of St Faustina.
