About Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Jaszczurówka

A wooden chapel in the Zakopane style from 1904-1907, designed by Stanisław Witkiewicz, on a stone foundation with arcaded porticoes.

The Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Jaszczurówka is a wooden church in the Jaszczurówka district of Zakopane, designed by Stanisław Witkiewicz. Construction began in 1904 and the consecration took place in 1907. It is entered in the heritage register and is among the best-known examples of the Zakopane style.

What the chapel looks like

The building has a visible log construction and stands on a high stone foundation shaped as arcaded porticoes. The shingle-covered roof is crowned by a small turret with a bell. The interior consists of a rectangular-ended chancel and a single nave. The wooden high altar is styled like a highlander cottage, and the side altars date from the 1950s. The stained glass windows were designed by Stefan Matejko: they show Our Lady of Częstochowa and Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn, and the coats of arms of Poland and Lithuania.

History and care

The chapel is a branch church of the parish in Toporowa Cyrhla. At first it had no permanent custodian and was served by priests resting in the Tatras. From 1955 its care was entrusted to missionaries from Olcza, and from 1983 to Marian priests from Toporowa Cyrhla. The land and the building belong to Tatra National Park.

In the second half of the 20th century the chapel was deteriorating. A larger renovation lasted from 1977 to 1981 and covered the foundation, the turret, mould-infested parts of the walls and gallery posts, and the lightning protection system. Father Jan Kowalik, the parish priest of Olcza, was instrumental in it. The chapel lies on the Lesser Poland Wooden Architecture Route.

Nearby

The chapel stands at the foot of Nosal, about 1.2 km from the summit. At a similar distance, about 1.8 km, rises Wielki Kopieniec. The centre of Zakopane lies a few kilometres away.
