About Chapel of Blessed Jerzy Popiełuszko in Kraków

A recent chapel in the Złocień estate, the first in Kraków dedicated to Blessed Jerzy Popiełuszko, built from 2009.

The Chapel of Blessed Jerzy Popiełuszko stands in the Złocień estate, at Agatowa 39, on the outskirts of Bieżanów. It is one of the youngest Roman Catholic churches in Kraków.

A chapel dedicated to a blessed

It is the first in Kraków and the second in Poland, after the church in Nuna near Warsaw, to be dedicated to Blessed Jerzy Popiełuszko, who was beatified in 2010. The dedication was officially given on 15 August 2012, together with the creation of the parish.

Construction

Efforts to obtain a chapel for the fast-growing estate began in 2007. A year later a design by the architects Janusz Wieczorek and Barbara Jońca was ready, and on 21 April 2009 work on the foundations began. The first Mass in the unfinished shell was held on 4 October 2009. In 2010 the remaining storeys were raised and the building was roofed, and the chapel received the portrait of Fr Jerzy on 1 December that year. Finishing work continued until 2014.
