A historic townhouse on Plac Mariacki, a branch of the Museum of Kraków with the exhibition “Bourgeois House”.
The Hipolit House at Plac Mariacki 3 in Kraków is a branch of the Museum of Kraków. The building once belonged to the Hipolit family, was rebuilt many times, and after a thorough restoration was handed to the museum in 2003.
The two-storey townhouse holds the permanent exhibition “Bourgeois House” (Dom mieszczański). It shows how the people of Kraków lived: according to Wikipedia from the 17th to the 19th century, and according to the description on the museum's website, urban life in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The museum also runs educational workshops here, for example on carnival traditions, 19th-century fashion, old games and dances.
The townhouse is entered in the register of immovable monuments, entry LAKI-252-31 of 27 April 1931. The register dates it to the 16th century and describes it as a brick townhouse.
The building stands right by St Mary's Basilica, and it is a few dozen metres to the Main Market Square and the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice).
