Tarnów Ghetto

Tarnów
About Tarnów Ghetto

A ghetto for the Jewish population in Tarnów, in existence from June 1942 to 1943, mainly in the Grabówka district.

The Tarnów ghetto was an area set up and run by Nazi Germany for Tarnów's Jewish population. It existed in 1942-1943.

What the ghetto was

The resettlement of the Jewish population into a separate part of the town began in March 1941, and the ghetto was formally established on 19 June 1942. It covered mainly the Grabówka district in the eastern part of the town. The number of Jews in Tarnów then grew through the forced concentration of residents of surrounding villages and small towns. The Wikipedia entry estimates this growth from 25 to 40 thousand people.

Liquidation

The liquidation of the ghetto began on 2 September 1943, after the arrival in the town of Amon Göth, commandant of the Płaszów camp. The town was declared "free of Jews" on 9 February 1944. The numbers of those murdered given in the sources are approximate and differ between publications, so we do not give a single figure here.

Remembrance today

Since 1995, in mid-June, the Days of Remembrance of Galician Jews, Galicjaner Sztetl, have been held in Tarnów, organised by the Tarnów Land Museum and community committees. Near the town centre is the New Synagogue.
