Private contemporary art gallery founded in Kraków in 1985, with works by Wróblewski and Gierowski.
Zderzak Gallery is a private art gallery in Kraków, founded in 1985. It was established as an independent institution, operating outside censorship and in opposition to the state and church art institutions of those years.
The aim of the gallery was to show the most interesting phenomena of young Polish art; in the mid-1980s this was the wave of the return to painting and Neue Wilde art. Zderzak preceded the period of political transformation and is described as the only Polish private gallery whose history began in communist times. The weekly “Polityka” twice, in 1997 and 2005, named it the best gallery in the country.
The collection includes works from the circle of the new expression of the 1980s, paintings, gouaches and drawings by Andrzej Wróblewski, and paintings and watercolours by Stefan Gierowski. According to the gallery's website, works by old masters are also on offer. Wilhelm Sasnal and Joanna Rajkowska, among others, made their debuts at the gallery. Zderzak has published more than a hundred publications on art.
