Branch of the Tatra Museum in the Oksza villa of 1895, showing contemporary art by artists connected with Zakopane and Podhale.
The 20th-Century Art Gallery in the Oksza villa in Zakopane presents above all works by contemporary artists connected with Zakopane and Podhale. It is a branch of the Tatra Museum named after Dr Tytus Chałubiński.
The villa was designed by Stanisław Witkiewicz for Bronisława and Wincenty Korwin-Kossakowski and was built in 1895. During the Second World War it housed a Domestic Science School, and after the war a tuberculosis preventorium for children and young people and a holiday home.
In 2006 the authorities of Lesser Poland Voivodeship handed the building over to the Tatra Museum. Revitalisation and conservation work lasted from 2007 to 2010. The gallery was opened to visitors on 15 May 2011 with the exhibition “Zakopane - the Navel of the World”.
The exhibitions focus on 20th- and 21st-century art by artists connected with Zakopane. The exhibition programmes change, so check the current layout on the Tatra Museum's website.
Close by, less than 1.5 km away, stands the Karol Szymanowski Museum in the Atma villa. Not far away is also the Nature Education Centre of Tatra National Park.
