About Convent House with Chapel in Grodkowice

A former ochronka from 1905 designed by Jan Sas-Zubrzycki, today a chapel, the oldest place of worship in Kłaj municipality.

The convent house with a chapel in Grodkowice in Kłaj municipality (Wieliczka County) is a former ochronka (a charitable shelter and nursery) from the early 20th century. The chapel inside it is the oldest place of worship in the municipality.

History

The ochronka on the estate of Stanisław Żeleński was designed by Jan Sas-Zubrzycki and funded by Anna Żeleńska, wife of Władysław Żeleński. In 1905 the building was handed over to sisters of the Congregation of the Sisters Servants of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Stara Wieś. They were to care for the sick and teach local children, which they did until 1949. The building was later a school, and for several decades it has served only a religious function. The chapel is used by the parish in Brzezie.

Architecture

It is a two-storey building on an irregular plan, resembling a two-storey suburban villa, with a chapel and a tower. Grey and red brick and sandstone were used. In front of the house, on a small mound, stands a figure of the Virgin Mary. The building together with the figure is entered in the municipal heritage records.

Practical information

  • In the municipality there is also the church in Niegowić.
  • Arrange entry to the chapel with the parish.
