About Dom Pod Obrazem in Kraków

A tenement from the 15th-16th century at Szpitalna 18, with a 19th-century facade and an image of the Virgin Mary from which it takes its name.

Dom Pod Obrazem (House Under the Picture) is a historic tenement at Szpitalna 18 in Kraków's Old Town, a few dozen metres from the St Florian's Gate.

A building made of two tenements

The house was created in the 15th or 16th century by joining two older buildings. The present facade dates from the 19th century and has Classicist features: six unevenly spaced bays, a stone entrance portal and rectangular windows in frames with cornices. The cellars were covered with barrel vaults in 1860.

What can be seen

A Gothic portal with a pointed arch from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries connects it with the cellars. In the gallery by the entrance there is an image of the Virgin Mary, from which the tenement took its name. The wooden staircase from 1860 replaced an older stone one from 1779.

The tenement has been entered in the heritage register since 19 February 1968 and in the municipal register of monuments. It stands not far from the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre.
