About Tserkva of Sts Cosmas and Damian in Skwirtne

A wooden Lemko tserkva from 1837 with polychromes from around 1900.

The Tserkva of Sts Cosmas and Damian in Skwirtne is a former Lemko Greek Catholic tserkva (wooden Eastern-rite church) from 1837. After 1947 it was taken over by the Roman Catholic Church and today it is a branch church of the parish in Uście Gorlickie. It lies on the Wooden Architecture Route.

Architecture

Wikipedia regards it as a model example of a 19th-century Lemko tserkva of the north-western type. It is wooden, of log construction, in three parts: the chancel, a wider nave and the women's vestibule, each under a separate roof. The tower is of post construction, and the whole is covered with shingles. Around the building stands a wooden fence with a single gate.

Interior

The walls are covered with polychromes made around 1900: the Holy Trinity is shown on the nave ceiling, and the Protection of the Mother of God in the women's vestibule. The icons in the iconostasis date from the early 20th century, and older ones, from the early 19th century, hang on the nave walls.
